Emissions compliance

Check the emissions program for your truck and the states you operate in. Start with California’s Clean Truck Check, then review other state requirements at the source.

Official program resources · Confirm your vehicle’s requirements

Requirements depend on vehicle weight, fuel, registration location, where you operate and program exemptions. These selected resources are not a complete nationwide list. A state omitted here may still have emissions requirements.

Drive-Diva.com provides information and agency links; it does not determine or certify compliance. Confirm eligibility, fees, test methods and deadlines with the agency. Links open official external sites in a new tab.

California · California Air Resources Board (CARB)

Clean Truck Check

CARB’s Heavy-Duty Inspection and Maintenance (HD I/M) program checks that heavy-duty vehicle emissions controls function properly.

Operating in California, including out-of-state trucks
CARB states that subject vehicles must report, pay an annual vehicle compliance fee and submit required passing emissions tests. These requirements apply to subject vehicles registered outside California when operating in the state.
Check the schedule for your vehicle
Use CARB’s vehicle-owner information and current guides to confirm eligibility, exemptions, reporting and testing deadlines. Do not assume every truck has the same testing interval.
Have ready
Vehicle identification number (VIN), engine model year, fuel type, gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR), registration state and any CARB notice or account details.

Other state emissions programs

Other states have diesel emissions programs with different registration, weight and roadside rules. These are separate from California’s Clean Truck Check.

New Jersey · MVC / Department of Environmental Protection

Heavy-duty diesel emissions

New Jersey’s guidance describes annual smoke-emissions testing for diesel vehicles with a GVWR of 18,000 pounds or more, within 90 days of initial or renewed registration, at an MVC-licensed diesel Private Inspection Facility.

The roadside program applies to heavy-duty diesel vehicles registered in New Jersey or out of state. Confirm periodic inspection obligations for your registration and vehicle with MVC; roadside enforcement and annual registration-linked testing have different scopes.

New York · Department of Motor Vehicles

Diesel emissions · Registration area matters

Non-exempt diesel vehicles with a maximum gross weight (MGW) over 8,500 pounds, as shown on the registration, require an annual diesel emissions inspection when registered in the Diesel Emissions Metropolitan Area: New York City, Nassau, Suffolk, Rockland and Westchester counties.

For diesel vehicles over 8,500 pounds MGW registered elsewhere in New York, DMV says an annual diesel emissions inspection is not required, but random roadside diesel emissions inspections may apply. Lighter diesel vehicles follow different rules. Confirm exemptions and your registration area with DMV.
